PQSCADA

1.1 PQSCADA Overview

The Complete Power Quality Data Center Solution is Comprised of Five Basic Entities

  • Neptune  M4400 Power Quality Data Center instrument

  • PQSCADA  Software
  • PQSCADA Site Manager server software entity installed in a system server

  • PQSCADA Node server software entities installed in a system server for each instrument

  • PQSCADA Investigator analytical software running on a PC work station

  • The Power Quality Data Center is exploited by the PQSCADA Analysis Software system. Whereas monitoring a site measured by the M4400 meter can be accomplished using any web browser from anywhere in the world, the ability to analyze the electrical network with the intent of pinpointing a destructive power quality event rests not on monitoring but on the continuous storage of high resolution data for each of 12 channels, and the consequent manipulation of this data. The data is stored on board the instrument using the patent pending PQZip compression software. For effective manipulation of the data in order to allow useful site analysis, the data from a number of instruments must be collected, manipulated and presented on the exact same time line.

This is accomplished in the PQSCADA system by using a site server equipped with a Node for each measuring point and a logical hosting entry point named Site Manage.

Neptune M4400 Power Quality Data Center

The M4400 device is responsible, among other tasks, to monitor and store power quality measurements using the patented PQZip compression technology. The device is capable of communicating the data to the PQSCADA node via Ethernet LAN.

    PQSCADA Node

Each Neptune M4400 instrument communicates via Ethernet LAN with its own exclusive Node on the system server. Each Node manages only one M4400 device.

The Node downloads compressed data from the Neptune M4400 instrument and stores all the data in the server historian storage in a way that guarantees fast response for user queries.

When a request for a query is issued, the Node is responsible for fetching the data from its local storage and to perform the necessary mathematical calculations. The data is formatted for efficient presentation on the PC client running Neptune PQSCADA Investigator software.

The Node web site application contains the means to configure various aspects of the Node and to monitor its status.

    PQSCADA Site Manager

The Site Manager governs any number of Nodes. It is responsible for the following tasks:

  • Compartmentalization of system complexity

  • Node hosting

  • Add (install), remove and updating Nodes

  • Monitoring and assurance of Node availability (keep alive)

  • Node health display

  •  Web links to Node web site

  • Delegates query requests to the correct Nodes

  • PQSCADA Investigator

This application enables the investigation and analysis of power quality issues by selecting different measuring points from around the site (WHERE), selecting an initial time frame (WHEN), and then choosing the parameters to analyze (WHAT).

The application can connect to a Node directly or to the Site Manager. In case of Site connection the Site Manager compartmentalizes system complexity and delegates the queries to the relevant underlying Nodes.

The Investigator is downloaded from the Site Manager web site and installed on a workstation PC.

    Time accuracy

All the instruments in the system, including those in different LANs, are synchronized in time in order to allow the Investigator software to accurately display different points in the electrical system as it was at a precise point in time.

    Distributed topology

The PQSCADA Software is distributed architecture software. This topology allows the following capabilities:

    • Availability - Each entity can be located and connected via the network

    • Scalability – Entities can be adapted to new conditions and their capabilities expanded

    • Expandability - The site can be expanded with ease

The Site Manager and Node Manager make the network communication transparent using a web interface and web site technology, enabling third party integration.

    1.2 The Installation Process

The PQSCADA software suite is installed from the Neptune Installation CD. The Installation will install all prerequisites necessary for installation automatically except for Windows IIS. The subsequent instructions will instruct on ALL necessary steps for installation including Windows IIS, for which the Windows installation CD will be required.

After the installation is completed, an Internet Explorer icon bearing the name of the site given during installation will be deposited on the PC desktop. Clicking on this icon will open the Site Manager.

The Site Manager is the tool used for installing, configuring and removing the Nodes that manage the data from the M4400 PQ Data Center.
